"We need to start reframing the conversation from instead of just trying to plug leaks, we need to get more students interested in the first place," Miller says.

We are thrilled that the first all-Canada ACM-W celebration of women in computing will be held in Ottawa in January, 2016, building on the success of previous events held in that country. We are grateful for the leadership and amazing energy of the chief organizers: Wendy Powley, Anne Condon, and Gail Murphy.

Go to the actual interactive chart, put in some words, and see where CS falls. Interesting, if you put in "unfair", CS is the only discipline for which that word is used more for male faculty than for female. Considerably more computer science faculty are called "savvy", with women leading.Women lead across the board in being "unclear", except in math. But we also do pretty well at being "clear" (virtually tied with men in CS). Have fun trying out all the terms your students use to describe you.

Is the Professor Bossy or Brilliant? Much Depends on Gender

An interactive chart of words taken from millions of student reviews of their instructors offers a vivid illustration of unconscious gender bias.

This makes a case for why we need to be very vigilant about what goes on in elementary school classrooms, but a bigger question is how do we get this information out to the very teachers who need to overcome their unconscious bias?

Fri, 02/06/2015 - 05:39
"The upshot of all this is that even if there are innate mathematical abilities, their significance pales in comparison to the effects that culture has on mathematical performance. And certainly, given the weight of evidence for stereotyping effects, innate mathematical differences cannot be used, as some do, to justify gender gaps in technical fields. It's time to stop obsessively trying to find differences between men and women and to focus that energy on breaking down the cultural norms that keep girls out of math."

Are Women Worse at Math? It's Time to Stop Asking

Giving Robots Gender Might Be Bad for Human Women

In 2007, General Motors ran a commercial featuring an assembly-line robot that loses its job after dropping a screw. The robot doesn’t look human—it’s a mechanical arm and some hydraulics mounted on a metal body with wheels. But it definitely felt human, enough that viewers’ concerned and angry resp…
