ACM's FY 2017 Annual Report

The past fiscal year included many forward-looking initiatives for ACM. The Future of Computing Academy was launched, providing a platform for the next generation of computing professionals to address pressing challenges faced by the industry. The Professional Ethics Committee began a two-year project to update its landmark Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. And ACM celebrated the 50th anniversary of the A.M. The Huffington Post invited ACM to contribute a monthly blog on current issues in technology and society. ACM member blog posts are intended to provide insightful, thought-provoking articles to Huffington Post readers on a variety of computing and information technology topics, and show how computing and information technology are ubiquitous in our daily lives. ACM bloggers explore the impact of technology on society and how this impact may evolve in the future. 

Celebrating 50 Years of the ACM Turing Award

ACM's celebration of 50 years of the Turing Award culminated with a conference June 23 and 24, 2017 at the Westin St. Francis in San Francisco. Keynote talks and panel discussions highlighted the significant impact of the contributions of the Turing Laureates on computing and society, as well as looking ahead to the future of technology and innovation. You can watch videos of these historic presentations here

Videos from 5th Heidelberg Laureate Forum Available for On-demand Viewing

The 5th Heidelberg Laureate Forum, September 24-29, featured 26 laureates of the ACM A.M. Turing Award, Abel Prize, ACM Prize in Computing, Fields Medal and Nevanlinna Prize exchanging ideas and discussing research with 200 of the most talented young researchers in these disciplines from around the world. Lectures and panel discussions are available for on-demand viewing via the video archive or on the HLF YouTube channel.

Public Policy Issues

Daily headlines about cybersecurity, encryption, artificial intelligence, drones, and a host of other issues, underscore the growing and complicated relationship between computing and public policy. In the US and Europe, ACM educates policymakers, the computing community and the public with the goal of fostering enlightened policies.

Vicki Hanson on How Women Are Reshaping Computing

In her blog post for Computer Weekly's WITsend blog, ACM President Vicki Hanson discusses ACM's all-female leadership team, how diversity is helping to redefine what a computing professional is, and how the digital world is expanding career opportunities for non-technical people. "While most will not become expert, basic skills will be required for them to be effective in their careers and to deal with the myriad of online offerings for communication, entertainment, retail, and government services," she says.
